Like so many of her remarkable mixed-media figures, Marisol’s Baby Girl has been an audience favorite since the early 1960s, when the Albright-Knox became the first museum to formally acquire the artist’s work. Although Marisol’s assemblage sculptures were often associated with the Pop art movement during its earliest years, works like Baby Girl are distinct from the observations on mass media and mass culture put forward by friends and peers such as Andy Warhol. Instead, in a style that is sometimes quizzical or satirical but always highly accessible, her sculptures address the role of women in society as well as the artist’s personal reflections on family and childhood. While many include plaster casts of Marisol’s face and hands, the artist makes an appearance in Baby Girl in a different way: it is an image of her face that we see on the doll standing on this larger-than-life baby’s knee.
