To request an image of an artwork that is not online or is under copyright with a third party, or to request digital files in sizes or formats other than those offered through the museum’s website, please contact one of the museum’s distributors, as outlined below. Permission for such uses is granted at the sole discretion of the museum though its distributors.
Please have the following information available before submitting your request:
- Artist and title of the artwork
- Format desired (color or black-and-white)
- Author’s name, title, and publisher of the publication in which the work will be reproduced
- Date of publication
Requesting Images for Educational and Scholarly Use
The Buffalo AKG contributes select digital images of artworks in its collection to the Artstor Digital Library, a subscription-based image database featuring a range of images from some of the world’s leading museums, photo archives, scholars, and artists, made available for academic, educational, and scholarly use. If you are affiliated with an institution that subscribes to Artstor, you can access these images directly through Artstor’s website. If you do not have access, you can contact Artstor to request temporary access.

Requesting Images and Permissions for Commercial Use
To request digital images or permissions for commercial use, please contact Art Resource. Art Resource acts as the museum’s primary agent for the distribution and licensing of the museum’s images and will provide high-quality digital images when possible. A fee may be charged depending on the nature and type of the proposed use and the availability of the image(s) requested. All requests for new scanning or new photography are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Upon approval, additional fees will apply. New photography requires a minimum of six weeks.
