In addition to exhibiting compelling contemporary figurative sculptures on loan in Bodily Space: New Obsessions in Figurative Sculpture, the Albright-Knox presented stellar examples of figurative sculpture from its collection by modern masters such as Alexander Archipenko, Jean Arp, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Gaston Lachaise, and Wilhelm Lehmbruck, as well as works by more contemporary artists such as John Ahearn, Louise Bourgeois, Stephan Balkenhol, Petah Coyne, Cathy de Monchaux, and Kiki Smith.
These works were installed together in the special exhibition galleries following Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession—Sculpture from The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, confirming the relevance of Rodin's innovations while demonstrating the remarkable variance of a tradition of figuration since the turn of the last century.
This exhibition was organized by Senior Curator Douglas Dreishpoon and Curatorial Assistant Kristen Carbone.
