A new exhibition opened yesterday at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery highlighting the creative work of Western New York students, and the dedication of the teachers who inspire them. 

Today, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery opens a new exhibition, Shade: Clyfford Still / Mark Bradford, featuring the work of celebrated American artists Mark Bradford (born 1961) and Clyfford Still (1904–1980).

Today, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s Public Art Initiative announced a new collaboration with Shea’s Performing Arts Center to create a mural on the wall of the 710 Main Theatre, currently owned and operated by Shea’s. The mural will be designed by artists Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn, a Baltimore-based artist team that works to transform public spaces into playful and vibrant experiences.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is proud to present the 2016 AK Teens: Future Curators Exhibition, Viewpoint. Each year, this program enables local students to organize an exhibition of artwork created by their peers. This year, nineteen students from the Western New York area came together to create an exhibition that focuses on multiple perspectives, both physical and interpersonal. The exhibition will span two spaces, both the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s Clifton Hall Link, and the Buffalo Center for Arts and Technology. It will include sixty works chosen from nearly six hundred entries, submitted by artists from seventeen different schools. The AK Teens: Future Curators program is made possible by the generous support of the First Niagara Foundation.

Today, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz joined Albright Knox Art Gallery Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Janne Sirén and art enthusiasts at the museum to announce the return of Free Admission Week for all Erie County residents. The week is a popular way for the museum to express its gratitude to Erie County residents and drew thousands of art enthusiasts and explorers in 2015. Free Admission Week 2016 will be held from Sunday, April 17, through Saturday, April 23 (the Albright-Knox is closed on Mondays).

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s Public Art Initiative is seeking fabric donations for the creation of a monumental work of art by Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Browder (American, born 1976). Once completed, the work, titled Spectral Locus, will be installed on the façades of three prominent buildings in Buffalo in August 2016.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced that Dr. Jennifer Foley has been appointed to the position of Director of Education and Community Engagement. Dr. Foley brings a wealth of experience to the museum, having served in a number of key roles at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Humanities Council of Washington, DC, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Most recently, she held the position of Director of Interpretation at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where she managed the development of digital interpretive materials and multimedia content and oversaw the department’s myriad programming activities.

On Sunday, March 20, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery will host a free release celebration for The Impressionist Revolution and the Advent of Abstract Art, written by Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Dr. Janne Sirén. The event will take place in AK Café from 4 to 6 pm, where Dr. Sirén will be on hand to sign copies. 

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced today that it intends to select an architectural design partner for an expansion at its Elmwood Avenue campus. The five firms included on the Museum’s shortlist of potential partners are Allied Works Architecture, Bjarke Ingels Group, OMA, Snøhetta, and wHY. Final selection is expected to be announced in June 2016, with the design phase of the project to take place over the following year.

Beginning February 27, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery will open two new exhibitions, For The Love of Things: Still Life, and Torey Thornton: Sir Veil. On February 26, at 7:15 pm, as part of the Emerging Voices Lecture Series, the museum will present a free talk with artist Torey Thornton where he will discuss his practice with Godin-Spaulding Curator & Curator for the Collection Holly E. Hughes. 

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery recently collaborated with Artstor, an online image-sharing resource used by museums, libraries, and universities worldwide, to make over 2,000 images from the museum’s fine art collection available in the Artstor online digital library. 

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery will begin the new year with exhibitions featuring three artists recently spotlighted in art and architecture publications. These artists include Joan Jonas, recently named one of artnet news’s “30 Most Exciting Artists in North America Right Now;” Erin Shirreff, one of Architectural Digest’s “8 Incredible Artists on the Rise;” and Torey Thornton, who was recently included in Artsy’s “16 Emerging Artists to Watch in 2016.”
