Albright-Knox Art Gallery Announces Fall Programming

Buffalo, NY – Today the Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced dates and lineups for its Art of Jazz, Buffalo Chamber Players, and Director’s Lecture Series programs. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the museum or on the Albright-Knox website. Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director JoAnn Falletta was on hand for the announcement and will play with the Buffalo Chamber Players in its first concert of the season. Opening Concert with JoAnn Falletta
Thursday, October 13, 2016, 7:30 pm
To celebrate its ten-year anniversary season, the Buffalo Chamber Players welcome special guest Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Music Director JoAnn Falletta. Maestra Falletta sets aside her baton and joins the ensemble on guitar for Niccolò Paganini'sQuartet No. 15 for guitar and strings, a work she performed with the ensemble in its inaugural season. The program also includes the music of Jean Françaix and a new work for strings by Western New York composer Rob Deemer.
An Evening with Krzysztof Penderecki

The Buffalo Chamber Players host renowned Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki during his historic visit to Buffalo. In a program selected by Maestro Penderecki himself, the concert includes his Cadenza for solo viola, Quartet for clarinet and string trio, and Sextet for clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello, and piano.
Opus Number Zoo

Music often finds itself representing and imitating aspects of our daily lives. This concert presents a wide range of musical works associated with animals, including Franz Schubert's beloved “Trout” Piano Quintet. Also on the program are pieces by Luciano Berio, Heinrich Biber, Olivier Messiaen, and Francis Poulenc.
Music and Dance

The Buffalo Chamber Players explore the synergy of music and dance in collaboration with Lehrer Dance, an exciting and innovative professional dance company based in Buffalo. The concert also features the premiere of a newly commissioned work by Buffalo composer Caroline Mallonée written for the Buffalo Chamber Players.

Individual concert tickets are $20, $15 for AK Members, and $5 for students. Season tickets for all four concerts are available at a discounted rate of $70 ($50 for AK Members). Season tickets are on sale from July 20 to the first concert on October 13. Individual concert tickets go on sale September 1. Buy your season tickets before September 1 and receive a complimentary beverage at the reception after the first concert.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements

One of the most important voices in American music, Steve Colemon has been internationally recognized for his compositions and recordings of music that straddles numerous genres. A recent winner of the prestigious MacArthur Genius Award, and the Doris Duke Fellowship, Colemon’s experience as a composer, performer, producer and educator are unparalleled. He will be joined by Jonathan Findlayson (trumpet), Miles Okazaki (guitar), Anthony Tidd (bass), and Sean Rickman (drums).
Dafnis Prieto Sextet

A prolific composer, percussionist, author, and educator, Dafnis Prieto quickly made his mark on the American jazz scene when he arrived in New York in the late 1990’s. Since then, he has become one of the most sought-after musicians in the international jazz scene. A winner of the 2011 MacArthur Fellowship, Prieto has brought Afro-Cuban drumming to a previously unattained level.
Mary Halvorson’s Reverse Blue

Mary Halvorson has garnered extensive praise from both her fellow musicians and the international press. Following three years of study and collaboration with Anthony Braxton, Halvorson moved to New York City where she has become one of America’s most in-demand guitarists. Reverse Blue will feature Halvorson (guitar), Chris Speed (saxophone/clarinet), Elvind Opsvik (bass), and Tomas Fujiwara (drums).
Steven Bernstein’s Sexmob

As one of the original members of the New York–based Knitting Factory Crew, Bernstein has collaborated with almost every type of musical ensemble imaginable. As a composer, arranger, and improviser, he is recognized for his unique voice and his depth of musical concepts. Sexmob explores the quartet format that was codified by Ornette Colemon, altered by Steven’s groundbreaking slide trumpet playing. Bernstein will be joined by Briggan Krauss (sax), Tony Scherr (bass), and Kenny Wolleson (drums).

Director's Lecture Series
Reserve your place now for this unique opportunity to take a course with Albright-Knox Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Dr. Janne Sirén, Deputy Director Dr. Joe Lin-Hill, and Senior Curator Dr. Cathleen Chaffee. Each lecture will focus on a single work of art in the Albright-Knox collection.
As a special benefit, tickets for this year’s Director’s Lecture Series will include a pre-lecture reception in the AK Café. Each ticket includes one complimentary glass of wine, light hors-d’oeuvres, and the opportunity to visit with the evening’s lecturer. Receptions will be held at 5:30 pm and lectures will begin at 6:30 pm with questions and conversation from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.
