An expanded world of artistic expression is coming to thousands of middle school students across Erie County (“the County”) as a vital public art collaboration between the County and the Albright Knox Art Gallery will put educational art kits focusing on five celebrated artists into students’ hands and classrooms in the coming weeks.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery will hold a series of public conversations over the coming weeks in which community members are invited to share thoughts and ideas for the museum's growth and development. At the museum's annual meeting in early October, AK Board President Tom Hyde noted that "campus development is no longer an option; it is a necessity."

Over the Labor Day holiday weekend, billboards began to appear across Erie County bearing a simple message to residents: “You Are Beautiful.” The work is part of the Public Art Initiative, a collaboration between the Albright-Knox, Erie County, and the City of Buffalo.

Albright-Knox Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Dr. Janne Sirén and County Executive Mark Poloncarz unveiled a new public work of art at Canalside this afternoon. 

The Albright-Knox announces an historical position for its Chief Curator, Douglas Dreishpoon. As of May 1, Douglas Dreishpoon will assume a new role as the museum’s first Chief Curator Emeritus.

On Friday, April 8, at 7:30 pm, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery will present a free talk with artist Sopheap Pich as part of the Emerging Voices Lecture Series. Pich will discuss two of his works in the Albright-Knox’s collection, Cycle, 2011, and Luminous Falls No. I, 2013, as well as a new work, Rang Phnom Flower, 2015, which is part of the special exhibition For the Love of Things: Still Life.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced Aaron Ott as Public Art Curator today. Ott is charged with developing public art projects throughout Erie County to bring art beyond the environs of the museum and into the community. 

Leslie H. Zemsky, President of the Board of Directors of The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, governing body of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, announced an historic bequest to the museum by the late Peggy Pierce Elfvin tonight at the Academy’s Annual Meeting. Mrs. Elfvin’s extraordinary generosity will endow the position of the Albright-Knox Director in perpetuity and provide important operational support to the museum. Her gift of approximately $11 million, of which the Albright-Knox has received $8.6 million to date, represents one of the most significant bequests in the museum’s history. 

Thomas R. Hyde has been elected President of the Board of Directors of The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, governing body of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced today that its Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Janne Sirén its eleventh Director. Dr. Sirén is the first director from the Nordic region to take the helm of a major American art museum. Speaking about the appointment, Albright-Knox Board President Leslie Zemsky said, “We are delighted Janne will be coming here to lead the Albright-Knox, and I know he is as excited as we are. He is an impressive scholar and visionary administrator who is able to embrace and connect local, national, and global stages in a relevant and viable way. He brings extensive experience and knowledge to the Albright-Knox in all areas of programming and also a passion for the Gallery’s growth and development. Janne is an extraordinary leader, and he shares our vision for the active role of the Albright-Knox in the growth and vitality of our community. He has a wealth of experience in promoting economic development and growth through cultural tourism, which is such a high priority for us here at the Gallery and in the Buffalo Niagara region.”
