An emerging African-American artist residing in Austin, Texas, Charles's work had recently gained national attention and acclaim. This was the artist's first solo exhibition in a major museum.

The Big Picture: Recent Acquisitions in Photography drew from the Albright-Knox's then newly expanded photography collection. 

Michel Verjux: Light Connection was Verjux’s first project for a North American museum, superimposing five projected circles from (or onto) two buildings of different period and style.

Masterworks: Italian Design, 1960-1994 was organized by the Denver Art Museum and circulated by The American Federation of Arts as the first major comprehensive survey of contemporary Italian design since The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented The New Domestic Landscape in 1972.

In cooperation with the Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation and the Board of Directors of Forest Lawn Cemetery, the museum presented this exhibition of photographs by Buffalo photographers Stanford Lipsey and Seth Colby.

Being & Time: The Emergence of Video Projection featured celebrated video artists Gary Hill, Bruce Nauman, and Bill Viola, along with then-emerging practitioners Willie Doherty, Tony Oursler, and Diana Thater.

The first New Room of Contemporary Art exhibition featured Bernd and Hilla Becher’s photographs of industrial facades, taken from 1970 to 1992.

This exhibition of approximately 125 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper celebrated the generous gifts of 361 works of art given to the Albright-Knox by A. Conger Goodyear.

Celebrating Calder, organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, was a whimsical exhibition featuring more than 50 sculptures, drawings, jewelry, and tapestries by Alexander Calder.

Dawoud Bey: Portraits 1975–1995 was organized by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and presented a 20-year survey of more than 90 images focusing on the artist’s developments in the genre of portraiture.

Co-organized by the Albright-Knox and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, The Breakthrough Years celebrated and paid tribute to the late work of one of the most important and influential painters of the abstract expressionist movement, Arshile Gorky.
