Highlighting two generations of collecting, this exhibition included a wide selection of 50 works by artists dating from the 15th century — including Rembrandt, Redon, Rouault, and Johns.

Local attorney F. Paul Norton discovered his own interest in the graphic arts after a colleague casually introduced him to a recent print acquisition. Thus, the Norton Family Collection — a fine group of works by Old Masters and modern artists — was created. Norton’s son, Frederic P. Norton, shares not only his late father’s profession, but also his enthusiasm for collecting prints.

Collecting prints encourages a highly specified insight. A collector develops knowledge of technical and historical facts with every acquisition, finding subtle beauty in an object that may appear to others only as simple lines and passages of brown and black ink on paper. To the passionate collector, each sheet is a world shared intimately with the artist.

This exhibition was organized by Senior Curator Cheryl Brutvan.
