Thursday, February 18, 2016

Buffalo, NY – The Albright-Knox Art Gallery recently collaborated with Artstor, an online image-sharing resource used by museums, libraries, and universities worldwide, to make over 2,000 images from the museum’s fine art collection available in the Artstor online digital library.

“We are excited with this collaboration because it allows the Albright-Knox to share thousands of high-resolution images of the fine art collection with educators and students around the world,” said Kelly Carpenter, Digital Assets Manager at the Albright-Knox. “This partnership with the international Artstor community will ultimately broaden access to our extraordinary collection to facilitate learning in the digital age.”

Founded officially in December 1862, the Albright-Knox is among the oldest public arts institutions in the United States. Since its inception as The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, the museum has been dedicated to acquiring, exhibiting, and preserving modern and contemporary art, giving rise to one of the world’s most extraordinary art collections. The Albright-Knox’s collection is especially rich in post-war American and European art. Impressionism and post-Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and art from the 1970s through the end of the century are also well represented.

“Founded with a mission to enhance scholarship and teaching through the use of digital images and media, Artstor is a nonprofit organization committed to digital collection solutions for universities, museums, schools, and libraries worldwide,” according to the organization’s website. Artstor’s “primary goals are to assemble image collections from across many cultures and eras in support of educational and scholarly activities, and to work with the arts and educational communities to develop collective solutions to the challenges of working in a digital environment.”
