From 1948 through 1955, the sun makes frequent appearances as a theme in Joan Miró’s “Poem-Titles”; the titles of other members of this body of work include The Red Sun Gnaws at the Spider, 1948; Sunbursts Wound the Late Star, 1951; The Sun Hugs the Man in Love, 1952; and The Setting Sun Caresses Us in the Moonlight, 1952. In The Sun Eater, man finally reaches the sun and makes it his own. Despite being confined within the belly of the figure, the sun is central to this composition, much as it is in Day.
