This collection catalogue celebrates the museum’s rededication to collecting the art of our times through the Room of Contemporary Art Initiative, initiated in 1939. The catalogue begins with a forward that addresses the process and philosophy by which works of contemporary art entered the museum’s collection, and an introduction to the various movements that had shaped contemporary art from around the turn of the century to 1949. It also features a series of full-page reproductions of and short introductory essays on the most significant works of contemporary art that had been acquired by the museum to date.

Two women look out toward the viewer from this brightly colored painting. The artist depicted these women using simple, flat shapes with dark outlines. The woman in a caramel colored dress at left sits on a floor cushion next to sheet music. The woman at right wears a marine blue jumpsuit with yellow triangles at the bottom of the legs. She has one foot on the floor and one on the couch on which she sits while playing guitar. A red tile floor contrasts with a black wall decorated with large green leaves.

Abstract shapes filled with solid areas of red, blue, white, and black paint float in a loosely linked cluster in the middle of this small beige canvas. Many of the shapes loosely resemble buildings, including a red structure with blue windows and tall black smokestacks at center, which sits beneath a white rectangle featuring the letters L and R in blue. A white shape with red edges at bottom resembles at boat while a patch of blue at bottom left may suggest water.

This wooden sculpture could abstractly resemble a reclining female body. The dark brown wood is polished to reveal the wood grain and knots throughout the form. The figure’s legs seem to be gently bent, and she appears to be resting on her elbows, with her head propped upright. The artist left the torso as an empty space, allowing viewers to see through the sculpture.

Two small roughly defined figures stand in an opening framed by a low wall and several stark houses. The houses, wall, ground, and sky are painted in a limited range of grayish creams and browns. Muted pops of color come in the form of pinkish roofs on several of the homes and green shutters on the home closest to the foreground, which is shown in three-quarter view and fills much of the left side of the painting.

This realistic, but minimally detailed sculptural head of a woman is nearly life-sized and sits on a black, square base. Her short neck ending in a slight curve to indicate the shoulder line. Textured plaster and a palette of ivory, peach, ochre, and dark amber enrich feminine features, such as rounded lips and almond-shaped eyes accentuated by dark contours and pale pupils. Slicked-back, bobbed auburn hair and flushed, freckled cheeks, suggest that she is a modern woman of her time.

She appears to be wrapped in a fabric garment so that only her face, the top of her head, and a portion of her right hand are visible. Beneath a lined forehead, her eyes are half open and her lips are set in a deep, weary frown.
