Willie Doherty
Northern Irish, born 1959
Born in Northern Ireland, the photographer Willie Doherty lives and works in Derry, also known as Londonderry. One of the most photographed places in Europe, Derry is revered for its breathtaking, hilly topography, which is marked with vestiges of political and cultural conflict. Through his simple act of walking, looking, and filming or photographing, Doherty has captured the ways in which the city and its surrounding landscape have been shaped and altered by political events since the early 1980s. Border Road II hails from his series of works focusing on the section of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland near Derry. Burnt cars, road blocks, fences, and empty roads that lead into pastoral scenes serve as reminders of strife, and Doherty's images of this scene can read more like still lifes rather than landscapes.
