Jeanne Dunning
American, born 1960
Jeanne Dunning’s provocative, surreal imagery delicately shifts between sublime beauty and the grotesque. The Blob 4, eerily reminiscent of the classic 1950s science fiction film The Blob, depicts an amorphous mass that envelops a female body. This unsettling image calls to mind issues of morbid obesity or other diseases, confronting our discomfort over physical failings and what we can and cannot control. Dunning focuses primarily on the female form, but her images transcend gender, reflecting on a society obsessed with veiling bodily flaws as it aspires towards perfection.
