In honor of the centenary of Mr. Ralph C. Wilson, Jr.’s birth, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Detroit Institute of Arts have co-organized Humble and Human: Treasures from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Detroit Institute of Arts. This accompanying catalogue presents more than forty paintings and sculptures, dating from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, along with a lively essay by Richard R. Brettell, one of the world’s foremost scholars of the Impressionist era. From works by Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet to those by Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Cézanne, the book and exhibition capture the revolutionary nature of this well-loved period in the history of art through masterpieces from two extraordinary collections.
