Narsiso Martinez (b. 1977, Oaxaca, Mexico) came to the U.S. when he was twenty years old. His art, drawn from his experience as a farmworker, focuses on the people performing the labors necessary to fill produce sections and restaurant kitchens around the country. His portraits of farmworkers are painted, drawn, and expressed in sculpture on discarded produce boxes collected from grocery stores, making visible the difficult labor and onerous conditions of the “American farmworker.” Martinez lives and works in Los Angeles. His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, and his first major museum show on the East Coast was at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in 2023. Martinez’s work is in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth; and the Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, among many others. He was awarded the Frieze Impact Prize in 2023.

Con base en su experiencia como trabajador agrícola, su obra se centra en quienes llevan a cabo las tareas necesarias para abastecer de productos frescos las tiendas y las cocinas de los restaurantes de todo el país. Pinta, dibuja y esculpe sus retratos de jornaleros en cajas para transportar alimentos que recolecta en las tiendas, y con ellas hace visible el duro trabajo y las onerosas condiciones laborales del «trabajador agrícola estadounidense». Su obra se ha exhibido dentro y fuera de Estados Unidos. Su primera gran muestra en la costa este fue en el Buffalo AKG Art Museum, en 2023.
