While Matthew Ronay has been crafting sculptural assemblages from wood, fabric, and clay in one form and at one scale or another since the early 2000s, he only recently turned to making abstract, enigmatic objects like Everyware. In a departure from many of his earliest sculptures, which included meticulous re-creations of everyday items, works like Everyware only subtly suggest elements of plant and human life. Here, amorphous, fantastical shapes seem to be in flux, breathing and moving through and despite each other. This sculpture comes from a larger body of work that reimagines the “pastoral” landscape in a future that no longer supports traditional notions of natural purity and beauty.
