Kiki Smith often uses her body as a storytelling vessel. Untitled is made up of what she describes as “imprints and photocopies of my own hair, face, and neck—along with a ‘Cher’ wig—to create a wild, dynamic linear web.” The artist created a cast of her own head (if you look closely, you can see impressions of her cheek and ear), transferred it to a lithographic stone, and overlaid it with additional textures from the wig and corn silk. With its malleability and the opportunities it presents for experimentation, printmaking is a vital part of Smith’s working process. This work is both an abstract self-portrait and a reprisal of an earlier period of the artist’s career.
