To create works from his series “Pictures of Magazines,” including this one, Vik Muniz punched holes out of popular periodicals, separated these by color, and then created a collage from each tonal grouping. But what Muniz presents as the final work of art is not the actual collage but a larger-scale photograph of it. Here, he has updated Pointillism: a painting technique popularized in the late nineteenth century by the French artist Georges Seurat. The small, distinctly hued dots form an overall image, and Muniz investigates the role such bits might play within contemporary systems of digital manipulation. The color spectrum is only one subject of this series; other works depict images of famous works of art and celebrities.
