The four-person collective gelitin, whose members include Ali Janka, Wolfgang Ganter, Florian Reither, and Tobias Urban, is a performative group that produces objects and installations through improvised events. The group’s provocative sessions, which often push the boundaries of art-establishment decorum, engage the spectator in a kind of creative chaos—a mixture of hilarity, enjoyment, repulsion, and revelation. Untitled comes from Blind Sculpture, a ten-day performance that took place in New York City. For this event, the artists created objects blindfolded, with forty-five assistants and musical accompaniment by the artist Schuyler Maehl. The artists divided the results of the performance into five individual works, of which Untitled is one. The improvisational and associative nature of gelitin’s practice keeps its creative process in flux.
