Between 1962 and 1965, 297 works of art were added to the Albright-Knox's collection. A major portion of these acquisitions were on view in the special exhibition Contemporary Art: Acquisitions 1962–1965, from September 30 to October 30, 1966.
The exhibition illustrated the continued emphasis the museum's collecting philosophy placed on contemporary art. Of the 100 gifts of Seymour H. Knox, Jr., featured in the exhibition, seven were created in the 1950s and the remainder were created in the 1960s, thus reflecting the art of the time. This exhibition also included 31 paintings gifted by Clyfford Still in 1964, as well as two paintings by Still purchased prior to the gift.
Two works by Robert Indiana included in Contemporary Art: Acquisitions 1962–1965—Star, 1962, and Year of Meteors, 1961—are currently on view in Robert Indiana: A Sculpture Retrospective (through September 23, 2018), and many of the other works included in Contemporary Art: Acquisitions 1962–1965—including Robert Rauschenberg's Ace, 1962; Otto Piene's Any Fire Flower, 1964; Yaacov Agam's Loud Tactile Painting, 1962; Günther Uecker's Overgrowth, 1962; Roy Lichtenstein's Head—Red and Yellow, 1962; Tadaaki Kuwayama's Untitled, 1961; Julio Le Parc's Instabile-continuel lumière (Unstable-continual Light), ca. 1962; and Len Lye's Grass, 1965 (all pictured above)—are currently on view in Giant Steps: Artists and the 1960s (through January 6, 2019).
