Doris Salcedo
Colombian, born 1958
Doris Salcedo's memorials of broken furniture and concrete address the disappearances and deaths that permeate life in her native Colombia as a result of contemporary civil and drug wars. One chest of drawers collides into a second, representing the violence of everyday existence. A structure that once held valuable possessions is filled with an impenetrable, extremely heavy weight, analogous to the hearts, lives, and country of those involved in the violence.
