Lipsey Auditorium, Knox Building
Cornelia Bentley Sage Quinton was many things, including a painter, a curator, a promoter of the arts, and, not least of all, a trailblazer. In 1910, she notably became the first female director of a major art museum in the United States at the Albright Art Gallery, now known as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Her leadership largely shaped the institution’s robust tradition of honoring relationships with artists, which continues to this day. A true “Renaissance woman,” Sage Quinton’s story also highlights the significant impact and influence that women have had on the art world throughout history.
Join the Buffalo AKG’s Archivist Gabrielle Carlo and Manager of Philanthropy Dana Hogan, PhD, as they delve into the archival installation Cornelia Bentley Sage Quinton: "For the Glory of Buffalo!", now on view in the Knox Building. Explore what it meant to be a “Renaissance woman” through the lens of Sage Quinton’s history and her relationship with the arts. The discussion will also highlight other groundbreaking women artists throughout history who have overcome challenges and adversity to fundamentally shift the landscape of the art world.
