By the early 1970s, Fletcher Benton became frustrated with the limitations of both paint on canvas and kinetic sculpture, so in response he started creating three-dimensional sculptures composed of traditional bronze and steel.
Fletcher Benton's Folded Square Alphabet O, 1989, was installed on the Albright-Knox's Elmwood Avenue lawn, as pictured here, from June 2009 to August 2012, while another artwork was being treated for conservation.
