Collection Highlights

All Collection Highlights
  • George Went Swimming at Barnes Hole, but It Got Too Cold, 1957

    Joan Mitchell

Large, energetic brushstrokes in green, brown, black, red, blue, and white cover portions of this abstract painting’s white background. These marks are primarily concentrated in two areas: in the top half of the canvas, especially in the center, and on its lower edge, especially in the center and toward the right corner.
  • Portrait (R. Eisch), 1999

    Thomas Ruff

The head and shoulders of a white adult male with short brunette hair, blue eyes, and a reddish-brown goatee beard and moustache fill the majority of this large-scale color photograph. He wears a pale blue button-up shirt with a collar; the top-most button is left open. Minute details in the figure’s skin and shadows on the fabric are captured by the camera lens.
  • Sculpture classique (Classical Sculpture), 1964

    Jean (Hans) Arp

The gently curving contours of this white marble sculpture suggest a head, shoulders, and hips. The slim vertical form stands on top of and is contiguous with a cylindrical base.
  • Path, 2012-2013

    Andy Goldsworthy

One of five images. This vertically oriented photograph shows a landscape with patches of lush green grass separated by a graveled walking path stretching into the distance and toward a cluster of trees. A slightly darker brown wave pattern zigs and zags across the width of the pathway, running along its full length.
  • Infvitabile Fatvm, 1994

    Leon Golub

Much of this canvas, especially the top portion, is covered in rough patches of thinly applied black and red paint. A white mark extending from the top of the canvas divides it roughly in half; the black paint appears on the left side and the red on the right. This white mark also bisects the work’s title as inscribed in white paint along the top edge. The torso of a man, who appears to be suspended by his upstretched arms, appears in the bottom left.
  • Son, 1984

    Francesco Clemente

This vertically oriented painting features portions of a dark tree trunk, branches, and leaves set against patches of light gray sky. Hanging from select branches are four large yellow orbs resembling suns or planets. T-shaped fasteners connect these hanging shapes to the tree.
  • The Marvelous Sauce, ca. 1890

    Jehan Georges Vibert

A corpulent older man wearing a long white apron over his scarlet cardinal’s robes stands with a copper sauce pan in his left hand and a spoon held aloft in triumph in his right while, to the left, a younger man in chef’s hat and coat with an apron partially covering his bright blue, knee-length trousers looks at the spoon held in his right hand with skepticism. A large stove with a massive stone hood appears behind the cardinal, and a table laden with produce and meat appears behind the chef.
  • Manaò tupapaú (Spirit of the Dead Watching), 1892

    Paul Gauguin

Manaò tupapaú (Spirit of the Dead Watching)
  • Orange Crush, 1963

    Larry Poons

Light blue polka dots randomly pepper the solidly orange-colored surface of this large square canvas. Neat rows of six or seven dots line the painting’s edges. The contrast between the vibrant orange and pale blue creates an optical effect that makes it appear as if the blue dots are vibrating.
