Suchitra Mattai

Lives and works in Los Angeles

Suchitra Mattai is a multidisciplinary American artist of Indo-Caribbean descent who creates mixed-media paintings, sculptures, and installations that shed light on untold histories. She often combines processes and materials once associated with the domestic sphere, such as embroidery, sewing, “weaving,” and found clothing, in order to honor the labor of women. Mattai’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., and the ICA San Francisco, and in group exhibitions at the MCA Chicago and the ICA Boston. Her works are represented in private and public collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of Art, Bentonville, Arkansas; the Denver Art Museum; and the MCA San Diego. Mattai is a recent recipient of the Anonymous Was a Woman award (2023).
