Aliza Nisenbaum
Aliza Nisenbaum (b. 1977) makes socially engaged portraits that emerge from prolonged exchanges with members of carefully chosen and specific communities, such as transportation and health-care workers, immigrants, dancers, and grassroots organizers. By fostering connections and sharing skills and resources over extended periods of time, Nisenbaum develops an understanding of the identities, histories, and contexts that frame her subjects. She lives and works in New York City. Selected solo and two-person exhibitions have been held at the Metropolitan Opera, New York (2023–24), and the Queens Museum (2023). Her work is held in the permanent collections of museums and public institutions worldwide, including The Art Institute of Chicago; the Arts Council, Dublin; and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.
