Alejandro Macias
Born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, Alejandro Macias creates art that mirrors the division he felt living along the U.S.-Mexico border. Macias challenges both traditional and contemporary approaches, using figurative and abstract techniques as well as multimedia to capture the duality of his identity. He has been an artist in residence at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson; Château d’Orquevaux, France; and The Studios at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts. He was the recipient of the Lehmann Emerging Artist award, which included a two-person exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum, and has had solo shows at Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, Lubbock, Texas, and Presa House Gallery, San Antonio. He is currently Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Arizona School of Art in Tucson, where he lives and works.
