Laurie Simmons creates chromatically saturated, dramatically lit artificial environments with a heightened sense of theatrical space. By manipulating these core elements and utilizing toys and other inanimate objects as subject matter, Simmons draws the viewer into an uncanny domestic world. The present work is the final installment of her “Walking Objects” series, in which she added disembodied doll legs to ordinary household items such as a globe, a handbag, a house, and a toilet. The joining of banal objects with curvaceous female legs creates images loaded with references to conformity, memory, and the history women's domestic roles in society. Simmons’s animation of everyday objects with legs may refer to a time in her childhood when she wished that all the objects around her could come alive and be her friends. In Magnum Opus II (the Bye-Bye), Simmons gathers the objects from the series to “promenade” for a final curtain call.
