Buffalo AKG Public Art Initiative to Collaborate with CEPA Gallery and Oxford Pennant on New Project

Thursday, October 17, 2024

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum announced that the museum’s Public Art Initiative will collaborate on a new project with CEPA Gallery, Oxford Pennant, and artist Amy Fisher Price (American, born 1980).

Price, a New York City–born and Detroit–based artist, is a visionary creator whose main modality is sewing. Price weaves fabric into intricate works of art, crafting mesmerizing signs that pay homage to the urban landscapes that inspire her. Her works embody resilience, urban identity, and the ever-changing faces of cities, inviting viewers to encounter the rich tapestry of cultures and experiences that shapes our surroundings. Price’s meticulous attention to detail and artistic vision have garnered recognition within the national arts community.

In August, Price spent time in residence in Buffalo at the Oxford Pennant manufacturing facility creating her Buffalo-based banners and working on an editioned work to be released in the fall, and exploring CEPA Gallery’s archives to help curate images for an accompanying exhibition.

In November, Price’s banners will be installed in the Market Arcade Complex at 617 Main Street. The installation will be followed by a press conference and the opening reception for CEPA Gallery’s archival photography exhibition on November 15, curated in association with Price.

CEPA, the Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Arts, has a storied history dating back to its opening in 1974. Price has worked with the curator and archivist at CEPA to put together an exhibition of photos from CEPA archives that highlight the historic visual language of Buffalo as captured by photographers working in partnership with the center. Price’s banners and this photo exhibition will serve as a lead-up for a major CEPA exhibition, Portrait of Buffalo II, celebrating the historic 1978 exhibition Portrait of Buffalo.

About Amy Fisher Price

Amy Fisher Price is an artist working and residing in Detroit after studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. Price re-creates familiar but fading iconography of formerly industrial cities in her stitched banners and flags. Her work has been exhibited widely in Detroit, and she recently completed a residency with the Bed Stuy Art Residency in New York City, although she most often exhibits her work in the places she finds her inspiration.

By giving reverence to the often-overlooked visual language of our cities, much of which is born from a handcrafted tradition that is disappearing, Price not only celebrates the everyday iconography of our shared urban experiences but also forces us to take notice of how that iconography is changing. Whether the artwork is replacing part of a crumbling hand-painted advertisement or hangs like a speech bubble from a neglected property, Price brings life to the built environment.

About the Buffalo AKG Art Museum

Founded in 1862, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery) is the sixth oldest public art institution in the United States. For more than 160 years, the Buffalo AKG has collected, conserved, and exhibited the art of its time, often working directly with living artists. This tradition has given rise to one of the world’s most extraordinary collections of modern and contemporary art.

In June 2023, following the completion of the most significant campus development and expansion project in its history, the Buffalo AKG opened anew to the public. The project was funded by a $230 million capital campaign, the largest such campaign for a cultural institution in the history of Western New York, including $195 million raised for construction and $35 million in additional operating endowment funds.
