Storytime & Artmaking: Alma and How She Got Her Name

Take inspiration from Juana Martinez-Neal's book Alma and How She Got Her Name to create your own name drawing. (While this activity is inspired by a book, you do not need to read the book to do the activity.)

About the Book

If you ask her, Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela has way too many names: six! How did such a small person wind up with such a large name? Alma turns to Daddy for an answer and learns of Sofia, the grandmother who loved books and flowers; Esperanza, the great-grandmother who longed to travel; José, the grandfather who was an artist; and other namesakes, too. Artmaking Activity

1. Write your name on a piece of paper. (Make sure to leave extra space between each letter so you have room to make them into block letters.)

2. Using the line letters as a guide, create block letter shapes around them.

3. Trace your block letter shapes with your pen.

4. Now erase your line letters.

5. Fill in your block letter shapes with symbols that represent your interests, talents, and accomplishments.
