This exhibition was originally organized by The Museum of Modern Art as part of a series of traveling exhibitions designed to provide an accessible introduction to the evolution of modern art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was accompanied by a catalogue written by Alfred H. Barr, Jr., MoMA's first director.
