Collection Highlights

All Collection Highlights
  • L'Ambitieuse (Political Woman), 1883-1885

    James Tissot

A woman in an elaborately ruffled pink dress with a large feathered fan enters an ornately decorated ballroom filled with party-goers on the arm of a much older gentleman. She looks left and outward beyond the viewer, while the attention of nearly all other male figures in the scene is directed at her. The textures of various surfaces and fabrics are painted with rich detail and texture, especially the pink dress ruffles gathered on a plush red ottoman at the bottom of the frame.
  • Fields of Grain as Seen from Train, 1931

    Arthur Garfield Dove

Geometric forms in different shades of red, green, and light brown shape this abstract landscape. A large green triangular shape stripped with seven black furrows, stretches from the middle of the top edge to the bottom-right corner and toward to the bottom-left corner. A dark red shape with a scalloped edge borders the right side of the triangle, and a light brown sphere patterned with five horizontal waves peeks out from behind the triangle’s left side.
  • Synchromy in Orange: To Form, 1913-1914

    Morgan Russell

A vibrant array of colorful geometric forms abut and overlap one another in the abstract kaleidoscopic patterning that covers this large, vertically oriented canvas. The colors range from red, blue, green, and orange, to pink, black, maroon, and white. A thin red painted line separates the bulk of the composition from a border of red, yellow, blue, and green rectangles alternating with white.

  • Still Life #20, 1962

    Tom Wesselmann

    Still Life #20
  • George Went Swimming at Barnes Hole, but It Got Too Cold, 1957

    Joan Mitchell

Large, energetic brushstrokes in green, brown, black, red, blue, and white cover portions of this abstract painting’s white background. These marks are primarily concentrated in two areas: in the top half of the canvas, especially in the center, and on its lower edge, especially in the center and toward the right corner.
  • Green Horses, 1988

    Bruce Nauman

  • Peristyle: Five Lines, 1963-1964

    George Rickey

    Peristyle: Five Lines
  • The Messenger, 1996

    Bill Viola

The first of three stills shows a nude man floating on his back in dark blue water, visible from the waist up. Light shines on his body from above, highlighting his face and part of his torso.
