Alex Katz: The Complete Woodcuts and Linocuts 1951-2001 was devoted exclusively to the 42 woodcuts and 36 linocuts that Alex Katz had produced since 1951. While Katz established himself as one of the leading American painters of the 20th century, his woodcuts and linocuts are the perfect medium to explore his fascination with appearance, perception, and representation. While simple, bold, and colorful, his compositions reveal a wide range of emotional ambivalence and psychological complexity. His three main genres, landscape, individual portraits, and group portraits were included. The exhibition was organized and circulated by Peter Blum Gallery, New York and accompanied by a fully illustrated publication documenting the work. All works were courtesy Colby College Museum of Art, gift of the artist.
