  • L'Objet invisible (Mains tenant le vide) [Invisible Object (Hands Holding the Void)], 1934 (cast executed 1935)

    Alberto Giacometti

A life-sized bronze abstract female nude holds her hands placed in front of her chest, as if cradling an invisible sphere. She appears to be perched on a tall chair, which supports and frames the figure from behind. The facial features on her flat, round head are angular. Her long, skinny body terminates in long legs bent at the knee. The figure’s feet rest on a narrow rectangular shaped stool at the sculpture’s base.

Collection Highlights

All Collection Highlights
  • Painting No. 46, 1914-1915

    Marsden Hartley

Diverse abstract patterns layer atop one another and a black background to fill much of this painting. Slightly below the center of the painting is a circle with a red center with white and black rings. Above this curves a red arc with two parallel, irregular white lines that spans nearly the entire width of the painting. Behind these elements are smaller sections of checked and ribbon-like patterns.
  • The Anguish of Departure, 1913-1914

  • Le Bassin du Jas de Bouffan (The Pool at Jas de Bouffan), ca. 1878-1879

    Paul Cézanne

Similarly short, distinct brushstrokes coalesce into the trees and shallow, walled pool that fill this landscape. A thin-trunked tree with light-dappled yellow-green foliage fills much of the left side of the canvas. Behind the tree, a low sandy colored wall contains a shallow, rectangular pool of water. Additional trees with darker green leaves line the right edge of the pool, extending to the upper edge of the canvas.
  • Femme cousant (Woman Sewing), ca. 1879

    Berthe Morisot

The profile of a young woman bent intensely over the sewing work she holds in her hands fills the foreground of this portrait-oriented painting. Her caramel-colored hair is pulled back from her face in a bun, and she wears a dark green dress topped with a white lace shawl. In the background, a white urn and a wooden box open to reveal its red interior sit on top of a table covered in a cream colored and floral patterned cloth.
  • Untitled, 1986

    Olivier Mosset

This large, horizontally oriented abstract painting is visually divided into two square portions. On the left, alternating red and purple stripes of the same width span the height of the canvas. On the right, stripes of the same color and size run horizontally from the right edge to the painting’s overall center. The lines formed by the stripes are very straight and even.
  • 1957-D-No. 1, 1957

    Clyfford Still

Yellow, jagged-edged forms tear through portions of this mostly matte black canvas. The largest of these forms runs the full height of the painting near its right edge. Each of the yellow streaks includes small areas of white, which most appear in the center of the form, flanked by larger areas of yellow. Three small patches of unpainted canvas are visible near the bottom-left corner.
