Floor 3, Gundlach Building

Drawing from the Buffalo AKG’s current exhibition, Northern Lights, this writing workshop invites writers to translate Nordic modernist landscapes into expressive verse. Guided by Buffalo’s Poet Laureate, Aitina Fareed-Cooke, guests will use ekphrasis poetry to turn sight into sound and light into language.

Through close observation of the boreal forest, long winter nights, and the aurora borealis visible within the artworks of Northern Lights, participants will craft collective poetic works that honor both the paintings and personal perspectives. Guests can expect practical prompts, attentive feedback in a supportive setting, and opportunities to share work. This program is ideal for writers seeking to deepen sensory detail, experiment with form, and connect with art through the power of language. Please note that our journey will be captured through photography and video!

Tales from the Porch: Expanding Perspectives at the AKG Art Museum is an ongoing series that broadens empathy and understanding through hands-on creative arts activities. Designed and developed by Aitina Fareed-Cooke, the project offers customized workshops built around current Buffalo AKG exhibitions and held on select M&T FIRST FRIDAYS.
