Carlos Llobet

Costa Rican, born 1981

Carlos Llobet pushes the boundaries of traditional Latin American printmaking by incorporating multiplicity, repetition, collage, painting, and weaving in his representations of the Costa Rican working class struggling to make a living. This portrayal of street life and social reality stems from his exposure to economic injustice in his hometown of Escazú and explores the ways the historical legacy of colonialism in Latin America has persisted in the growing income inequality throughout the region today. Llobet trained in printmaking at the University of Costa Rica and received his MFA from the University at Buffalo.
