Organized by the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Whistler: Prosaic Views, Poetic Vision featured 83 pieces from the university museum’s distinguished holdings of works on paper by the American master, James McNeill Whistler. Formed around the bequest of Margaret Watson Parker of Detroit, this collection’s quality places it among the best of its kind in the world, and its breadth — more than 180 prints, drawings, and watercolors — permits and in-depth look at the development of Whistler’s vision as it can be traced across a range of graphic media.
In conjunction, the museum installed Whistler’s Rival: Sir Francis Seymour Hayden. This exhibition focused on works from the Albright-Knox’s extensive collection of etchings by Sir Francis Seymour Haden, Whistler’s brother-in-law and rival.
This exhibition was organized by the University of Michigan Museum of Art and Senior Curator Cheryl Brutvan.
