Join artist Subodh Gupta for a discussion of his practice and work, including This is not a fountain, 2011–13, featured in the exhibition We the People: New Art from the Collection. The artist gathered used pots and pans from families all over his native India as the basis for this giant installation, which asks us to contemplate a range of pressing social problems, from the rapid industrialization of formerly agrarian societies to the consequences of water shortages and the impact of recycling on the environment.
About the Artist
Subodh Gupta was born in 1964 in Khagaul, India, and now lives and works in New Delhi. Before his education as a visual artist, Gupta, who is passionate about film, was a street theatre actor. The artist's change of residence from his native village to a major urban center is, in a way, an allegory of today's India. The growing middle class that migrated from villages to large cities is eagerly clearing the path for change and the dominance of global capitalist culture. Gupta is interested in what inevitably disappears in the process of such change.
Gupta's works have been the focus of numerous exhibitions worldwide. Recent solo exhibitions include From Far Away Uncle Moon Calls, Mead Gallery, Coventry, England (2017); Guests, Strangers and Interlopers, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Georgia (2016); Everyday Divine, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2016); When Soak Becomes Spill, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, England (2015); Everything is Inside, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurt/Main, Germany (2014); and Everything is Inside, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, India (2014). There was a major retrospective entitled Adda / Rendez-vous at Monnaie de Paris earlier this year.
Works by Gupta are in the collections of major museums, including Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; the Tate Collection, London, England; The Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Norway; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Texas; and The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, Israel.
