Guests gathered on March 15, 1991, for the Members' Preview of Faith Ringgold: A 25 Year Survey, which ran through April 28. The exhibition included Ringgold's paintings, masks, and soft sculptures, as well as the first in-depth focus on the artist's story quilts, a medium that grew out of her need “to tell stories not with pictures of symbols alone, but with words.”
Ringgold gave a free lecture on the inspiration for and evolution of her work on March 24, 1991, and educator Karima Amin presented a program of stories for families in April 1991.
Several of Ringgold's works are included in the special exhibition We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85, which opens the evening of Friday, February 16. In related programming, Ringgold's book Cassie's Word Quilt will inspire the Storytime Family Workshop during $5 Family Funday on April 8 and Karima Amin will provide her insights on We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85 in a Sunday Insights talk on March 4.
