All Collection Highlights
  • L'Homme au hamac (Man in a Hammock), 1913

    Albert Gleizes

L'Homme au hamac (Man in a Hammock)
  • Triptych with Footprints, 1970

    Antoni Tàpies

Three vertical cream-colored panels are joined to form a long thin horizontal work. A series of footprints stretches across all three panels, slightly above their centers. On the left panel, gray cloudlike forms float at top and bottom, and a grouping of letters and lines stretch diagonally from the upper left-hand toward the center. A series of lines and waves fill the bottom half of the right panel.
  • Janet, 1992

    Chuck Close

This large-scale portrait is painted in grayscale with a nearly all black background. A grid pattern covers the entire surface, and diamonds, ovals, circles, and other geometric shapes fill each square. From a distance, these patterned coalesce into a woman’s face and upper shoulders; the effect is similar to a pixelated photograph. The woman has short hair, cat-eyed glasses, dangly earrings, and she wears a shirt with a rounded collar.
  • La Fumée (Smoke), 1912

  • Petit nu bleu (Little Blue Nude), ca. 1878-1879

    Pierre-Auguste Renoir

A young white-skinned woman, nude to the waist, sits on the grassy bank of a body of water in the center of this vertically oriented painting. A blue cloth or portion of a garment with white edges loosely covers her lap. She grasps her left ankle, which rests on her right knee, with both hands, and she gazes toward the bottom left of the canvas. The paint was applied quickly and loosely with visible brushstrokes.
  • Nude Figure, late spring 1910

    Pablo Picasso

The contours of a figure gradually emerge from a field of muted browns, grays, and greens applied with visible brushstrokes. Dark lines partially divide the background into a patchwork of loosely defined geometric forms. Similar lines more concretely define the figure, who appears largely in profile with one arm raised behind her head.
  • Self-Portrait with Monkey, 1938

    Frida Kahlo

    Self-Portrait with Monkey
  • Divisibilité indéfinie (Indefinite Divisibility), 1942

    Yves Tanguy

Two biomorphic forms sit side by side in the foreground of this abstract, dream-like landscape. The smaller form on the left includes a gray square with red sticks emerging from its left side. Narrow gray stalks support the blue and pink shapes that make up the taller form on the right, which casts a long shadow toward the top left corner of the painting. Nine small circular discs with white sides and blue surfaces appear scattered throughout the scene.
