As part of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum’s quest for meaningful and impactful collaborations, the museum has established a National Council. This new group brings together the voices and viewpoints of visionary individuals from across the United States to support and steward the Buffalo AKG, one of the most renowned museums of modern and contemporary art in the world.

The members of the National Council are dedicated to expanding and amplifying the Buffalo AKG’s reputation as a leader in the global museum field. They believe in the evolving and essential role of museums as institutions that provide forums for discourse and dialogue. As leaders intrigued by what lies beyond the next hill, they enjoy forging connections with artists, cultural producers, thinkers, curators, and museum professionals. They serve as ambassadors for the Buffalo AKG by promoting the museum’s collection, exhibitions, and expansive programming at intersections where local, national, and global trends meet.

The National Council has a maximum membership of thirty-five families/individuals. The council meets formally twice a year, once virtually and once during a group trip. At home and abroad, members of the National Council enjoy ample opportunities to gather informally at various art- world venues such as art fairs and biennial exhibitions. Additionally, as part of the Buffalo AKG’s Director’s Travel Series program, council members are invited to join trips with the Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director and other team members to destinations in and beyond the United States. These opportunities for shared learning and exploration will include guided visits to artists’ studios, private collections, galleries, museums, cultural sites, and extraordinary culinary experiences.

The National Council has a profound impact on the museum’s celebrated exhibition program. Each year the Council selects one major special exhibition or two smaller exhibitions toward which it will direct its ccumulative annual membership dues, empowering the Buffalo AKG’s curatorial team to dream and think big when planning the museum’s exhibition program.
