Lecture: Cultural Policy Challenges in the Island Nation of Malta

Thursday, September 12, 2024

5:30 pm - 7:30 pm EDT

FREE
Lipsey Auditorium, Knox Building

Valerie Visanich, Associate Professor at University of Malta, will discuss cultural policy in the small island nation of Malta and how it connects to global issues. Malta is the site of many UNESCO heritage monuments, including Ggantija Temples, which are the oldest free-standing monuments in the world. Malta is also known worldwide for its many art museums, both traditional and contemporary. How Malta negotiates cultural policy issues both internally and externally (with other nations) is a story combining issues of post-colonialism, multiculturalism, adaptation, and assimilation. Professor Visanich will also discuss maltabiennale.art, Malta’s first art biennale, which took place March to May of 2024. The event has significance for local museums and artists, as well as for Malta’s standing in the global art scene.

The event is jointly hosted by the Arts Management Program at the University at Buffalo and the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, email artsmanagement@buffalo.edu.
