Buffalo, NY – In celebration of Block Club Month, the Albright-Knox will welcome the Board of Block Clubs of Buffalo and Erie County, Inc., and the entire community to enjoy a special Block Club Weekend at Albright-Knox Northland. This event is open to the public and will take place from May 20–22, 2022, during the popular In These Truths exhibition, though visitors are welcome at any time before and after the event weekend. Members of the community can also enjoy special art activities for all ages, refreshments, and receive information about the importance of local block clubs and how to connect with one in their area.

“The Board of Block Clubs of Buffalo & Erie County is a supportive team, built on a commitment to the community,” said Dr. Cortasia Solomon-Carter, Director of Public Relations for the Board of Block Clubs of Buffalo & Erie County. “We promote and respect self-expression, and a wide range of ideas and artistic integrity. In times of crisis, we need humanity, expression, and the community that the arts create. This event with the Albright-Knox is a fantastic way to celebrate art and the community.”

“Increasing our outreach and building relations with the local community are top priorities for the Buffalo AKG Art Museum,” said Dr. Callie Johnson, Director of Communications and Community Engagement. “Block clubs are an essential part of strong and thriving communities. Partnering with the Board of Block Clubs for Block Club Weekend at Albright-Knox Northland is a wonderful way to shine a light on the importance of block clubs and the intersection of local museums as a common ground where people can engage with each other around inspiring and thought-provoking art.”

About the Exhibition

In These Truths is an exhibition of works by Black cultural producers, co-curated by two of Buffalo’s most influential, charismatic, and insightful artists, Edreys Wajed and Aitina Fareed-Cooke, in collaboration with AK Curator of Public Art Aaron Ott. This invitational exhibition focuses on Black artists, emerging and established, who, through a wide range of mediums, provoke and reconsider, defy and embrace, test and talk about our shared reality. Collectively they create enduring and fertile forms that stand to profoundly challenge white America’s preconceived notions and to proudly present a Black America in all the complexity of its grace, struggle, and accomplishment.
