Join us for Jaume Plensa’s artist talk, as he discusses two of his celebrated works that reside in Buffalo, and how they fit into the greater trajectory of his practice. Most recently, Plensa’s Silent Poets, 2012, was installed at Canalside as part of the Public Art Initiative. The seated philosophers that adorn the sculptural piece reference meditation, contemplation, and conversation, particularly at night when the sculpture’s color transformations are best observed. Earlier, in 2012, Plensa’s sculpture Laura, 2012, became a familiar piece to the Buffalo community in its position on the Albright-Knox’s north portico facing the Scajaquada Expressway and the Buffalo History Museum. Much like Silent Poets, the twenty-foot-high marble portrait is intended to evoke a moment of peaceful contemplation.

Although both works are situated outdoors, in public settings, Plensa will respond to the more classical presentation of Laura and the urban presentation of Silent Poets. Additionally, the artist will present his background and provide insight as to how these two works fit in his large body of work.

About the Artist

Jaume Plensa (Spanish, born 1955) has created an extensive body of public works of art, including more than 30 site-specific sculptural installations across the globe. Working with conventional materials such as aluminum, bronze, glass, marble, and steel, often combined with less tangible materials like light, water, sound, and video, Plensa’s monumental sculptures take on many forms, all with the intent to evoke emotion and discussion amongst those who experience them. Visit Jaume Plensa’s Website
