Collection Highlights

All Collection Highlights
  • Tanktotem IV, 1953

    David Smith

A series of three-dimensional geometric forms balance on two forked legs in the front and a third leg in the back. Overall, the sculpture abstractly mimics the human form: a vertical half circle at the top serves as a head and is connected to the rest of the work by a long vertical rectangle that resembles a neck. Two additional long rectangles at the center of the work sit alongside further half circles that resemble a shoulder and two hips.
  • Return of the Prodigal Son, 1967

    Romare Howard Bearden

Fragments of printed images are collaged together and supplemented with areas of paint to shape the three figures that dominate this composition. The face of the left-most figure is the best defined; he stares back at the viewer, and his lips are twisted upward in a wry grin. With his left arm, he pulls the shorter figure at center toward him in an embrace. From the right edge of the canvas, a third figure appears in profile carrying a candle lamp.
  • untitled (to Donna) 6, 1971

    Dan Flavin

A square of fluorescent tube lights mounted in white aluminum fixtures sits on the floor in front of a corner of the gallery space. The lights that make up the top and the bottom of the frame shine bright blue light outward. The lights that make up the right and left of the frame cast yellow and pink light into the corner behind the sculpture.

  • Chemin de halage à Argenteuil (Towpath at Argenteuil, Winter), 1875-1876

    Claude Monet

This wintery landscape features a path that follows a still gray river as it curves from the bottom right corner of the canvas and recede into the distance under an overcast sky. On the right side of the painting, smokestacks on a distant are reflected in the water. Four small figures summarily rendered in dark tones walk on the path, with one appearing to move toward the viewer. To the left is a patch of trees and grass that peeks out beneath melting snow.
  • Couple II, 1996

    Louise Bourgeois

    Couple II
  • June 4-52 (tableform), 1952

    Ben Nicholson

A series of roughly rectangular shapes of pale blue, green, yellow, and white layer over and under each other across the surface of this portrait-oriented oil painting. A loose geometric patterning in thin black pencil overlays some of the shapes near the bottom center. A small, bright red triangle pops out from near the bottom left corner.
