David Antonio Cruz
David Antonio Cruz (b. 1974) examines the intersectionality of queerness and race through painting, sculpture, and performance. Focusing on queer, trans, and gender-fluid communities of color, he addresses the violence perpetrated against their members. A recent series explores the notion of “chosen family,” the nonbiological bonds between queer people based on mutual support and love. Cruz lives and works in New York. He has had recent solo exhibitions at the ICA San Francisco (2025), the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling, New York (2024), and the ICA Philadelphia (2023), and his work has been included in group exhibitions at the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, and the Zuckerman Museum of Art, Kennesaw, Georgia, among many others.
