  • Difficult, 1942-1943

  • Exuberance, 1955

    Hans Hofmann

Multidirectional, abstract brushstrokes animate the surface of this vertically oriented canvas. Dark blues, greens, and blacks contrast with passages of pale yellow and red. Two areas of red at top right and toward the bottom of the lower edge of the canvas seem to pulsate forward. At top left, a dark brown arc that looks like the letter C is surrounded with a dark rectangular outline.

  • Untitled, 1986

    Olivier Mosset

This large, horizontally oriented abstract painting is visually divided into two square portions. On the left, alternating red and purple stripes of the same width span the height of the canvas. On the right, stripes of the same color and size run horizontally from the right edge to the painting’s overall center. The lines formed by the stripes are very straight and even.
  • Chatham XI: Blue Yellow, 1971

    Ellsworth Kelly

This artwork is made up of two separate, rectangular panels installed adjacent to one another at a right angle. The top panel is horizontally oriented and a solid dark blue color. Aligned underneath the left side of this panel is a second, smaller panel that is vertically oriented and a solid yellow color.
  • Over the Edge, 1992

    Peter Halley

A light gray-green square sits slightly above center and fills much of this square canvas. L shapes of varying widths in cream, burnt orange, black, and mustard yellow extend from the square into the taupe-colored margins above and to the left and right of the square. Two additional brighter yellow L shapes, one dramatically thicker than the other, extend from the square into the burgundy-colored margin below the square.
  • Petit nu bleu (Little Blue Nude), ca. 1878-1879

    Pierre-Auguste Renoir

A young white-skinned woman, nude to the waist, sits on the grassy bank of a body of water in the center of this vertically oriented painting. A blue cloth or portion of a garment with white edges loosely covers her lap. She grasps her left ankle, which rests on her right knee, with both hands, and she gazes toward the bottom left of the canvas. The paint was applied quickly and loosely with visible brushstrokes.
