  • NIAGARA, 2012

    NIAGARA
  • The Tree, 1965

    Agnes Martin

On a square white canvas, artist Agnes Martin drew by hand a dense grid using graphite pencil. When seen up close, minor irregularities in the grid, including the straightness of the lines and spacing between them, are visible. From a distance, the faint lines of the grid appear to blend into the white canvas.

  • The Holstein Manifesto, 2008

    Matthew Ritchie

Black, vine-like tendrils cover much of a large white wall. These are interrupted to the left of center by a large painting featuring more of the tendrils overlaid with abstract washes of copper and taupe paint. On the right side, the tendrils coalesce in a large sphere encircled by the phrases “division of the heavens,” “division of the waters,” “division of the bodies,” and “M theory” in cursive. On the floor in front of the wall rests a long, tube of perforated aluminum surrounded by Tarot cards.
  • Abstraktes Bild (Abstract Painting), 1977

    Gerhard Richter

Three light-colored abstract forms, resembling zoomed-in and blurry details of paint strokes, stand out against this painting’s dark brown and green background. One thin stripe extends the height of the canvas; it is white at top and gradually gradates to red at the bottom. A second, thicker stripe in gray topped with white extends from the center of the right edge and appears to overlap the vertical stripe. The end of a third stripe, similar in shape and color to the second stipe, appears in the upper-left

  • Le Bassin du Jas de Bouffan (The Pool at Jas de Bouffan), ca. 1878-1879

    Paul Cézanne

Similarly short, distinct brushstrokes coalesce into the trees and shallow, walled pool that fill this landscape. A thin-trunked tree with light-dappled yellow-green foliage fills much of the left side of the canvas. Behind the tree, a low sandy colored wall contains a shallow, rectangular pool of water. Additional trees with darker green leaves line the right edge of the pool, extending to the upper edge of the canvas.
