  • Crowded Hearts, 1987

    John Chamberlain

Crumpled and compacted pieces of red, silver, and white metal from old cars form freestanding, pillar-like shape. The metal is mostly shiny but is battered and rusted in some places.
  • Civil Tapestry 5, 2012

    Theaster Gates

This large-scale wall-mounted sculpture features forty-one sections of fire hose of equal size laid vertically side-by-side. From left to right, the sections of fire hose progressively appear more worn. The dominant color of the fabric gradually transitions from yellow to tones of gray. Some sections of the fire hose are stamped with black letters spelling out the original manufacturer specifications.
  • Still Life on a Mantelpiece, ca. 1923

  • Flowers in a Vase, 1909

    Henri Rousseau

    Flowers in a Vase
  • Electric, 1963

    Edward Ruscha

The word “electric” in all capital, italicized letters spans across the center of this almost square canvas. The letters are painted in a gradient from bright yellow at the top to rich orange at the bottom, standing out in stark contrast against the solid deep blue background.
  • Page Boy at Maxim's, ca. 1927

    Chaïm Soutine

In this tall, narrow portrait, painted with loose, energetic brush strokes, a young man wearing a deep red uniform with matching cap stands in front of a dark burgundy, gray, green, and blue background. A row of gold buttons extends down the front of the boy’s jacket. His right hand is by his side, palm facing out, and his left hand is clenched in front of his waist. The figure’s dark eyes, hair, and moustache stand out again his pale skin.
  • "Untitled" (Double Portrait), 1991

    Felix Gonzalez-Torres

    "Untitled" (Double Portrait)
  • The Holstein Manifesto, 2008

    Matthew Ritchie

Black, vine-like tendrils cover much of a large white wall. These are interrupted to the left of center by a large painting featuring more of the tendrils overlaid with abstract washes of copper and taupe paint. On the right side, the tendrils coalesce in a large sphere encircled by the phrases “division of the heavens,” “division of the waters,” “division of the bodies,” and “M theory” in cursive. On the floor in front of the wall rests a long, tube of perforated aluminum surrounded by Tarot cards.
