Buffalo, NY – The Albright-Knox Art Gallery announced today the hiring of Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan as Assistant Curator, a new position in the museum’s Curatorial Department. Dr. Ryan previously held the position of Curatorial Research Assistant in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has also held internships at MoMA/PS1, the New Museum, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and taught courses on contemporary art at MoMA, Columbia University, and the Pratt Institute.
“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Ryan to the Albright-Knox. A talented scholar and dynamic educator, she will be an integral member of our Curatorial Department. At the Albright-Knox we explore the art of our time globally while engaging our community in new and innovative ways. We are a small, highly motivated crossdisciplinary team and we immerse ourselves in collaborations with pioneering artists. Dr. Ryan will play an important role in our pursuit of excellence in all our endeavors,” said Janne Sirén, Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director of the Albright-Knox.
A specialist in postwar and contemporary art, Ryan received her PhD in the History of Art from Columbia University in 2016. Her dissertation, McLuhan’s Bulbs: Light Art and the Dawn of New Media was awarded a 2014-2015 Jane and Morgan Whitney Pre-doctoral Fellowship by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She holds Master’s degrees from Columbia University and the University of California, Irvine. Ryan completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with and build upon the Albright- Knox’s permanent collection, which has long embraced the cutting edge, from the kineticism of the 1950s to the digital art of today,” said Ryan.
Ryan’s writing has been published in Artforum, Art in America, Even, Document, Art Journal, and Framework: The Journal of Cinema and Media, as well as in several edited anthologies and exhibition catalogs. She has presented conference papers and invited lectures internationally, including talks at NYU’s “Topics in Time-Based Media Art Conservation” speaker series in 2016 and the MediaArtHistories conference in Montréal in 2015. During her tenure at the Metropolitan Museum, Ryan co-chaired the Museum’s Time-Based Media Working Group, an interdepartmental group devoted to the collection, conservation, and exhibition of time-based media art.
