Over the centuries, wars, treaties, national alliances, and unions have shaped the national identities of the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. However, in a rare moment of cultural cohesion in 1913, the landmark traveling exhibition, The Exhibition of Contemporary Scandinavian Art, broke geographic barriers. The exhibition was the first of its kind to expose American audiences to artistic trends emerging from the Nordic region. When the exhibition arrived at the Albright Art Gallery in 1913, it made a profound impact on Canadian art, and led to the country’s first national artistic movement.
Join Peggy Pierce Elfvin Director Janne Sirén for this talk that explores points of connection between Nordic and Canadian modernism, while illuminating the impact that a single exhibition can have on cultural history and our perception of the world. This talk is the second in a two-part series dedicated to the exhibition Northern Lights, on view on Floor 3 of the Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building through Monday, January 12, 2026.
